Morgantown, WV – Conference realignment is never truly over in collegiate athletics. After major shifting over the last two seasons, we are now hearing more reports of potential moves by big time programs. Earlier today, it was reported that WVU’s 2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl opponent is now looking to move out of the ACC.

According to Sports Business Journal and Inside Carolina, the North Carolina Tar Heels are eyeing a move to the SEC in the near future.

Per the report, the Tar Heels are expected to be at the front of the pack of potential ACC exits, along with Clemson University. These moves are expected to stem from the programs seeking more financial opportunities in other conferences.

With this news, this could potentially signal an incoming collapse of the ACC. Should the league fall apart, the Big 12 may also come in and allow some of the programs to join their conference. This would likely mean that West Virginia, who was denied an invitation to the ACC prior to their 2012 entrance to the Big 12, would regain some of their regional rivalries that realignment took away in the past.

While this does not directly affect the Big 12 yet, things could move quickly should exits begin to decimate the ACC.
