Akheem Mesidor may just be the most unique player on WVU’s roster. Not because of his name, nor because of his Canadian roots. Mesidor has made his presence known on the field only four games into his true freshman season in Morgantown – and in limited limited snaps to boot.
Mesidor came to Morgantown with a plethora of excitement surrounding him. Not only was he a standout in high school, but he was ranked highly by all major recruiting outlets. Everyone recognized his potential before he even stepped on a college campus.
Last week was his official coming out party for Mountaineer fans. Mesidor had the best game of his career so far, tallying six total tackles and two sacks – bringing his season total to four sacks. Those two sacks interestingly enough came on back to back plays in a pivotal part of the contest against Kansas. His play was so stellar he was even named 247Sports’ True Freshman of the Week – a national honor.
The Mountaineer defensive line is one of the deepest and most experienced groups on the team. Honestly, it is by far the best position group on the team. Not only are the older guys making plays, but the young “Prince Akheem” is making his case to be seen as the anchor of the defense for the future, and keeping the excitement once the Stills brothers depart.
Look out for number 90 on the field next week. Chances are if Mesidor is on the field he is making a big play in the opponent’s backfield. We have ourselves a star in the making on the defensive line, and it will be interesting to see Akheem Mesidor develop into one of the best defenders in the Big 12 Conference.
