MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – The West Virginia Mountaineer baseball program has been represented well in summer league play this summer.

JJ Wetherholt, who is projected to go second overall in the 2024 MLB Draft according to MLB.com, played on the USA Collegiate National Team.

Wetherholt, a rising Junior, is projected to go number one overall in the 2024 MLB Draft according to Dan Zielinski of Baseball Prospect Journal.

On Wednesday the Appalachian League and the Cape Cod League announced its All-Star selections with there being a total of seven Mountaineers selected. Five were selected in the Appalachian League and two were selected in the Cape Cod League.

The five selected in the Appalachian League were INF Ellis Garcia (Princeton), INF Sam White (Pulaski), 1B Nick Barone (Greeneville). Pitchers Hayden Cooper and Cole Fehrman will represent Johnson City.

The two selected in the Cape Cod League were 1B Grant Hussey (Chatham) and LHP Derek Clark (Orleans).

The Appalachian League All-Star Game will take place in Kingsport, TN. It will be a two-day event on July 24 and 25. The league’s Home Run Derby will be Monday, July 24, and the All-Star game on Tuesday, July 25, per the league press release. The game will be streamed live on MLB.com and MLB.tv.

The 2023 Cape Cod League All-Star Game will take place on Saturday, July 22 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, MA with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The annual event includes a home run derby and a nine-inning game played between the East and West All-Stars.
