Bob Huggins Has Very Revealing Interview on The Jim Rome Show

Morgantown, West Virginia – Bob Huggins was on The Jim Rome Show yesterday and Rome – a legendary radio host who is a close, personal friend of Huggins – touched on a variety of topics in the interview.

Rome started out by asking Huggins how rewarding it’s been for him to come home to coach the West Virginia Mountaineers and lead them to national prominence.

“Well, obviously I love the place.  I was born in Morgantown.  My mom and dad were both born in Morgantown.  To be able to come back to the university that you graduated from is special for anyone, but I think it’s especially meaningful for me because of my relationship with the people in the state.  It’s just been great.  We’ve been fortunate enough to make some runs and make the people of West Virginia proud, and that’s what I wanted to do.”

The conversation turned to Huggins being offered a position with the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA.  Huggins said that “LA scares him” and didn’t necessarily think that was the right fit for him.  However, he does regret not taking another position in the NBA.

Huggins said, “Looking back, I should have taken the Miami (Heat) job.  That was the first one that I was offered.  I should have taken it.  It was a lot of money and I think a great organization and a great place to live.  I probably should have taken that one.”

Rome asked Huggins what his his poison or vice is right now, hinting at Huggins’ past struggles with drinking.  Huggins replied, “Diet Mountain Dew.”  Rome followed up by saying, “Nothing after a tough loss on a Saturday night?”  Huggins quickly shot back by saying, “Yeah, I’ll have drink some diet Mountain Dew.”

Finally, Rome wondered how much longer Huggins will continue as a head coach in college basketball and how Huggins will know when it’s time to retire?  “I honestly don’t know”, Huggins said.  “I’ve been blessed to be around the greatest coaches of all time.  I never really got a good answer from them and I don’t have a good answer for you.  Probably when it ceases to be fun.”
