Morgantown, West Virginia – Earlier today, Kevin Jones announced that Best Virginia – a team comprised of former West Virginia Mountaineers basketball players – will return for the 2021 TBT Tournament this summer.

Last March, before the pandemic, former West Virginia Mountaineer forward John Flowers asked Bob Huggins on “The Bob Huggins Show” to be the coach of Best Virginia in The Basketball Tournament.

It appeared that Flowers was joking when he asked, but announcer Tony Caridi made some great points, saying, “It would be a national story, you could coach your old guys one last time…”

Huggins pointed at his wife who said, “I don’t care”, then Huggins said, “I would love to.  I’d love to.  I’d want to do it for a lot of reasons, but mostly because I’d like to win you guys a million dollars.”  Huggins, of course, is referring to the $1 million dollar reward given to the winning team in the winner-takes-all tournament.

Last year’s Best Virginia roster was stacked with former Mountaineers, including Kevin Jones, Da’Sean Butler, John Flowers, Nathan Adrian, Jonathan Holton, Daxter Miles, Jr., Jaysean Paige, Tarik Phillip, Juwan Staten and Logan Routt, and this season will likely feature many of the same players.

Best Virginia has an incredibly talented, experienced group and could certainly compete or beat any team in the tournament, particularly with Bob Huggins as the coach.  The players currently on the roster are Bob Huggins’ guys and they are not only experienced playing together, they know what Huggins demands and they have an unwavering trust in him as a coach.

Now, it appears that his players want him to be their coach for one last time.  The Final Fourcast Podcast + Best Virginia social media account posted the following message with a picture of Huggins: “Before 2020 did 2020 things, it looked like a done deal last year.  What do we think?”

Huggins coaching his former players would be an great opportunity to not only help them win a lot of money but it would also be huge for the state of West Virginia.  “Best Virginia” with Huggins as the head coach would likely be one of the favorites to win this year’s TBT!
