MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — It’s official: former West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene has been cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will not make the 53-man roster. Multiple sources confirmed the news today, and while it may be the end of Greene’s time in Tampa, it’s certainly not the end of his story.
Greene’s preseason was better than most people expected. He caught 8 passes for 65 yards, including his first professional touchdown in the Bucs’ preseason finale. For a player who made the gutsy switch from quarterback to wide receiver just to keep his dream alive, those numbers are more than respectable. Frankly, they’re the kind of numbers that should’ve earned him at least a practice squad spot.
From my count at practice it appears the Bucs final cuts are:
WR Garrett Greene
DL CJ Brewer
DL Adam Gotsis
LB Antonio Grier Jr
CB Josh Hayes
CB Tyrek Funderburk
CB Roman ParodieA few were injured and will be designated as such and would revert to the Bucs IR. Josh Hayes looks…

But this is the NFL — a league that often favors draft picks and name recognition over heart, work ethic, and production. Greene was always going to be fighting an uphill battle, and in the end, the business side of football won out.
Here’s what can’t be taken away: Garrett Greene will always be remembered in Morgantown as one of the fiercest competitors to ever put on the gold and blue. He wasn’t the biggest or the flashiest, but his leadership, toughness, and passion for the game made him a true Mountaineer. He willed WVU to big wins and gave fans reason to believe again.
Tampa may have given up on him, but Greene has the kind of fire you can’t coach. Whether he catches on with another NFL team, finds his way to the CFL, or pursues another opportunity in football, you’d be foolish to bet against him.
For Mountaineer Nation, Greene isn’t defined by a roster cut — he’s defined by his heart, his loyalty, and the way he played the game. And that’s something no NFL decision can erase.
