BREAKING: Gee Explains Why He Kept Neal Brown

Neal Brown and Gordon Gee - West Virginia University

Morgantown, West Virginia – It was Wren Baker’s introductory press conference as the new director of athletics at West Virginia, but university president Gordon Gee stole the show, saying he was pleased with Neal Brown and the football program’s performance.

“It was a very challenging football year, obviously.” Gee explained. “But one of the things that I started realizing is that we put our football coach in a very challenging position because we played two Power 5 teams to start the season. We also had the toughest football schedule in the country. The fact that we went 5-7 in a very competitive environment is obviously something that I take a lot of pride in. I think that we played rather well.

I talked to a lot of people and everyone believed our coach has great opportunities in front of him and we needed to try to provide the kind of support and structure that would allow him to be successful.”

We did talk with Wren about Neal and he has already indicated his willingness and enthusiasm about working with Coach Brown. That’s very important to me. We are grateful to have Neal here. Few people have connected with the state of West Virginia like Neal Brown has.”
