Jasir Cox Makes Decision on Future

(Photo by WVU Athletics)    North Dakota State transfer linebacker Jasir Cox quickly became a key asset for the Mountaineer defense in 2022. The talented Missouri native finished the campaign with 62 tackles, 6 TFLs, 3 passes defended, and 2 fumble recoveries including one for a touchdown against Baylor. Today, Cox officially made his decision on his future. Travis Trickett Hinting WVU Return?

(Photo by USF Athletics) Travis Trickett is a fan favorite in Morgantown, there’s no doubt about it. The former WVU tight ends coach left the Mountaineers in 2022 to serve as the offensive coordinator for the South Florida Bulls. After South Florida made a staff change, Trickett was looking for work. According to reports, he was expected to accept the offensive coordinator position with Coastal Carolina. However, many fans are now speculating his return to Morgantown following his latest tweet. https://twitter.com/coachttrickett/status/1610383806758023171?s=46&t=ZmJ49fcw3HBw8yp0hsnuHg   Though there isn’t any context to the tweet, fans seem to think this could be Trickett indicating his return to Morgantown. “Let’s Go” is a common expression that the Mountaineer coaching staff uses all across social media. Only time will tell. Stay tuned to The Voice of Motown for updates

Pat McAfee Reacts to WVU Hiring Blaine Stewart

Cover Photo: ESPN From his roots with the Mountaineers, Pat McAfee has grown to become one of the most iconic figures in the sports world today. He had a pretty good career with the Indianapolis Colts, hosts the wildly popular Pat McAfee Show on SiriusXM, is an analyst for ESPN's College Gameday, and is a commentator for the WWE. Despite his very busy schedule, McAfee always comes back to discussing his beloved Mountaineers. He hasn't held back his disappointment about the 2022 season, which led to Neal Brown angrily responding to his statements during a post-game press conference. But the hiring of Blaine Stewart has seemingly helped McAfee trust the climb once again. “I’ve literally known Blaine since he was a child.. His dad, a legend, was my coach at WVU.. The facility was a 2nd home for Blaine when he was growing up… Now he has his own room there. This is really cool. I’m so incredibly proud of you my brother. Let’s GOOOOO,” McAfee tweeted in response to the news. The announcement came just two days after Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette broke the news of Stewart leaving the Steelers to join WVU Stewart, the son of the late former WVU head coach Bill Stewart, was in his second season with the Steelers as assistant wide receivers coach. He had spent two seasons as a coaching assistant before being promoted to his most recent role. Stewart is coming to the Mountaineers after a recent change in the wide receiver coach position with the hiring of Bilal Marshall. Prior to embarking on a career in coaching, the Morgantown, West Virginia native played wide receiver at the University of Charleston in 2016 and 2017, after beginning his collegiate career at James Madison University (2013-15).

Former Mountaineer Guides XFL Team to Comeback Win

(Photo via WVU)  It has been over two decades since former WVU Tight End Anthony Becht suited up for the Old Gold & Blue. The Pennsylvania native spent the entirety of his collegiate career (1996-1999) in Morgantown, tallying 83 catches for 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns. This would propel him to his opportunity at the NFL where he would play for five different teams over twelve years. After his retirement, Becht spent some time in the broadcast booth with ESPN before trying his hand at coaching. His first chance to be a head coach came in 2019 with the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). This wouldn’t last long, however, as the league went under before their first season in-operation was even complete. It would take him four years, but Becht has once again landed a head coaching gig - this time in the XFL. In the league now owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Becht was selected as the Head Coach of the St. Louis BattleHawks. The organization participated in their first game of the 2023 spring season yesterday, and to say it was one for the ages would be an understatement. Trailing 15-3 with less than two minutes to play, Becht and the BattleHawks used the league’s progressive rules to their advantage en route to a come-from-behind 18-15 victory over the San Antonio Brahmas. https://twitter.com/espn/status/1627443076644888580?s=46&t=-NGiFXRmWt9v_E3K7W7q2w The game was widely regarded as the best of opening weekend for the league. With many praising the team’s fight and unwillingness to go down, it’s easy to assume that Becht will be a rising star in the coaching ranks before we know it. Becht and the BattleHawks (1-0) travel to take on the Seattle Sea Dragons (0-1) this Thursday. The game is set for a 9 p.m. kickoff and will be televised on FX.

When Neal Brown Will Name a Starting Quarterback

(Photo by WVU Athletics)  Spring camp is now underway for the West Virginia University Mountaineers. Neal Brown, who is heading into his fifth season at the helm, will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to escape the hot seat. Despite a 22-25 record, Brown was given one last chance to redeem himself under Athletic Director Wren Baker. Easily Brown’s most important decision regarding the 2023 season will be his signal-caller. Redshirt junior Garrett Greene and redshirt freshman Nicco Marchiol are set to battle for the honors of QB1 following the departure of J.T. Daniels. Both quarterbacks saw action down the final stretch of the 2022 season when Daniels was benched during WVU’s 23-20 win over Oklahoma. Greene, who had been used sparingly up to that point, gave the team a much needed shot in the arm. His dual-threat ability was simply too much for the Sooners. With his shining moment coming in arguably one of WVU’s best outings since entering the Big 12, many believe he should be given the first opportunity to start. Marchiol, who was a highly-touted prospect out of high school, only saw action in two games last season. Outside of a game management job against Oklahoma State, his only other appearance was mop-up duty against Towson. Though the body of work isn’t there yet, his raw talent will give him a legitimate opportunity to emerge victorious in the competition. As for when Coach Brown expects a starter to emerge, he revealed that during his press conference on Monday. Should neither Greene or Marchiol clearly separate themselves during the spring, Brown will make the decision on his starting quarterback during fall camp. This is to be expected, however, as Brown has allowed every quarterback competition that he has overseen at WVU run into the fall. This will also be his first quarterback competition without a transfer since arriving in Morgantown in 2019. Stay tuned to The Voice of Motown for updates on WVU’s quarterback situation.

WVU Predicted to Finish in Top Half of Big 12

Twitter account College Football Blue Bloods has projected WVU to finish 2nd in the Big 12. Morgantown, WV - College Football Blue Bloods, a popular Twitter account, revealed their Big 12 projections for the 2023 season. To the surprise of everyone, their placement of the Mountaineers strongly contradicts the Big 12’s Preseason Poll. https://twitter.com/bluebloodsbias/status/1690887417304379392?s=46&t=cXIQ4JQG-pp-P6qrRwLwjw The account has WVU finishing 9-3 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 play. This is good enough for 2nd in the league, and an appearance in the Big 12 title game. A finish this strong would certainly guarantee Neal Brown more time. While it is easier said than done, it is far from impossible, despite popular belief. (Photo by WVU Athletics)
