Could Pat Suemnick Return to West Virginia?

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Following the 2023-2024 basketball season, PATRICK SUEMNICK announced that he was leaving the West Virginia program and entering the transfer portal.

In his farewell message, Suemnick said, “It has been an honor to suit up in the blue and gold for the past 2 years. I will cherish the memories and relationships I’ve built forever.

Thank you to Coach Huggins for giving me the opportunity to play for such a great program and University. Thank you to the coaching staff and teammates who went to battle with me get to where I am today.

With that being said, I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 1 year of eligibility left.”

Suemnick, a 6’8 forward from Green Bay, Wisconsin, averaged 4.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for the Mountaineers last season, weighed his options and ultimately decided to transfer to DePaul University, saying “Had to accept the Demaons are part of me” in a social media post.

However, yesterday, Suemnick shockingly revealed that he would no longer be attending DePaul. “After careful consideration and discussions with my family and mentors, I have decided to reopen my collegiate recruitment,” Suemnick said. “I am grateful for all the support and opportunities thus far and look forward to exploring new ventures.”

With that, the obvious thought is “why doesn’t Pat Suemnick just return to West Virginia?” After all, the Mountaineers have a slot available, he’s a big body which the team desperately needs, he’s an outstanding teammate and he’s precisely the type of player who would trive under new head coach Darian DeVries. He is familiar with the program and is a terrific role player who would be a perfect final piece for the West Virginia roster.

It almost makes too much sense.

However, according to a source close to the situation, it’s very unlikely. According to the source, “no one who played or was recruited by Bob Huggins will be back on the team.” Apparently, DeVries and perhaps Wren Baker want to completely move on from the Huggins’ Era, and unfortunately that means anyone associated with Coach Huggins would be asked to find a new home.

With that said, although Suemnick would be a great addition to the current roster, it appears that it is very unlikely to happen.
