MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Darian DeVries was formally introduced as the new head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers today and he immediately spoke about his time at West Virginia.
“I took the West Virginia a year ago because I thought it was the right fit. I felt like it was a great fit for myself and my family and all of that turned out to be true. I really respect the administration at West Virginia, they have a fantastic fanbase, and I’m appreciative of time at West Virginia. My intention was to continue to build on our year there, but this dream job came along and I couldn’t pass that up. This is one of the top schools in all of college athletics and one of the best brands in college basketball.”
“This is one of the premier basketball schools in the entire country”

DeVries went on to say that Indiana remained respectful during the process, allowing him to remain focused on his team at West Virginia. This implies that he was in fact in communication with Indiana while the season was still in progress. West Virginia lost its final game of the year against the worst team in the Big 12 Conference, Colorado, in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. You do have to wonder if he was fully committed and present as a head coach of the Mountaineers.
DeVries did appear less engaged as a head coach over the last several weeks of the season and obviously the team suffered during this time. If DeVries already had one foot out the door to Bloomington, Indiana, it’s unfortunate that he couldn’t properly perform his duties as a head coach of the university that he was employed by.

West Virginia finished the season with a 6-9 record in the final 15 games of the season, and the loss to the last-ranked Colorado Buffalos was the final nail in the coffin for the Mountaineers’ season.
