Emmitt Matthews and Jose Perez Exchange Words

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Last night following West Virginia’s 79-73 loss against St. John’s, a former player on the Mountaineers’ roster took to social media to stir the pot. Jose Perez, 25, who played for 5 teams in 6 seasons during his long and tumultuous college career, posted a message on that led to quite a bit of controversy among the West Virgina fanbase.

Perez said, “Thank you, Steve Masiello.” Masiello, who is now an assistant coach at St. John’s, was Perez’s head coach at Manhattan when he played there.

West Virginia fans took this a slight against the program, claiming Perez was thanking his former head coach for beating his former team. This led to Emmitt Matthews, who played for the Mountaineers from 2018-2021, and then again from 2022-2023, to reply to Perez by saying, “Move on bro.”

Perez and Matthews then exchanged barely understandable words like, “aii bett” (from Perez) and “Cmon fam you just doing the extra for no reason” (Matthews) and “Never extra I hit your line you could hit me back..don’t front on twitter..that’s the last thing ima say.” (Perez)

It appears that Matthews believes that Perez is attempting to cause problems where problems don’t exist. Perez, on the other hand, claims that he doesn’t want to cause any problems and even reached out to Matthews via his telephone to resolve the situation. He’d rather not handle this in front of the world on social media and will not say anything more on Twitter about it.

Perez, who never played a single minute for West Virginia and has a long history of immature and erratic behavior on social media, transferred to Arizona State and is averaging 12.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the Sun Devils.
