Former Coach Rumored to Return to WVU

After just one season in Morgantown, WVU Head Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Plitzuweit accepted the same position with Minnesota. The Lady Mountaineers, who finished the 2022-23 season with a 19-12 record, are now without a coach for the second straight year.

While names like Glenville State’s Kimberly Stephens have been kicked around, it appears that one very familiar coach could potentially be in line to take over the program.

That person is Mike Carey.

Carey, who spent 21 seasons in Morgantown, retired following the 2021-22 season. Plitzuweit was hired to replace him, and it now appears that the roles may reversed this time.

According to Connect-Bridgeport, Carey is interested in a return to WVU. Following a year out of coaching, the outlet reports that Carey is interested in a return to coaching and will listen to calls from teams within the area.

WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker announced this evening that the athletic department will conduct a nationwide search to find their next head coach. One could certainly expect Carey to be on the list of coaches contacted.
