Former Mountaineer is Coaching Under Dana Holgorsen

Former WVU Receiver T.J. Simmons is currently on the coaching staff of an opposing Big 12 team.

Houston, TX – WVU fans all across the Mountain State remember T.J. Simmons very well. Though he was never a flashy player, the former Alabama receiver transferred to Morgantown and put together one of the most respected careers in recent memory.

After tallying 1,197 yards and 9 touchdowns on 86 receptions, Simmons tested the professional game, but simply could not find his footing.

Many of you may have been pondering what the Alabama native has been up to lately following his playing career.

Well, the answer may actually surprise you.

According to Simmons’ social media bio, he is a wide receivers graduate assistant for the Houston Cougars. Cougars Head Coach Dana Holgorsen, who left WVU for Houston in 2019, coached Simmons on the Mountaineers’ roster in 2018.

Coaches giving their former players chances to get their foot in the door in coaching is not uncommon, and is something that Holgorsen does regularly.

Simmons, who has a magnetic personality, will undoubtedly be a perfect fit in the coaching game. It may take a few seasons, but he will likely be a position coach on the rise, sooner rather than later.
