Former West Virginia Defensive Coordinator Named a Top Assistant

Morgantown, West Virginia – Former West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has been ranked as one of the top assistant coaches in college football.

Gibson, 50, is a Van, West Virginia native and the current defensive coordinator at NC State. According to Pro Football Focus, Gibson is the 8th best assistant in the nation.

PFF had the following to say about him: “Gibson was promoted to being the sole defensive coordinator in 2020.

In each of the last two seasons, his defenses have finished among the Power Five’s 10 best in EPA allowed per play. This past season, NC State was sixth in the rate of successful plays allowed (28.5%).

Gibson was nominated for the Broyles Award in 2022 for his efforts.”

Gibson is considered a potential head coach possibility at West Virginia University if/when the position becomes available.
