MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The Pittsburgh Steelers made a roster move today, releasing defensive back Beanie Bishop as they continue to trim down their roster ahead of the regular season.
Bishop, who signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia, was hoping to carve out a role in Pittsburgh’s secondary. During his lone season with the Mountaineers, Bishop became one of the most reliable defensive backs in the Big 12, earning All-Big 12 honors after recording 67 tackles, 20 pass breakups, and four interceptions. His aggressive style of play and knack for disrupting passes made him a fan favorite in Morgantown and a player with plenty of intrigue heading into the NFL.

Despite his college success, the transition to the pro level has been a difficult one. Bishop saw limited action during the preseason and faced tough competition in a crowded Steelers secondary. His release doesn’t necessarily end his NFL journey—teams across the league will have the chance to claim him off waivers, and his production at WVU suggests he could be a fit for a roster in need of depth at defensive back.
For West Virginia fans, Bishop’s brief stint in the NFL won’t overshadow what he accomplished in Morgantown. He played with relentless energy and gave the Mountaineers a true playmaker in the secondary last season.
The Steelers, meanwhile, will move forward with their defensive backfield set as they prepare for the regular season. Bishop will now look for his next opportunity, whether that comes through a waiver claim, a practice squad signing, or another team giving him a shot to prove himself.
