Morgantown, WV – We are still well over seven months until the return of Mountaineer Football. However, that does not mean we cannot start looking ahead to what will be one of the most anticipated seasons in recent memory for the program.
The return of Rich Rodriguez has rejuvenated the fanbase and given hope for a football program that had become stagnant in recent years. While the roster will look very different, we still expect this to be a successful campaign in Morgantown.
Today, we are going to take a look at the 2025 schedule for Mountaineer Football and give our game-by-game predictions.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at how the Mountaineers will fare in 2025.
- 8/30 – Robert Morris
The second Rich Rodriguez stint begins at home with an opponent from the FCS in Robert Morris. While the Mountaineers may look a little rusty given their large amount of new additions, this is still a game the team should win handily. Nicco Marchiol looks comfortable in Rich Rodriguez’s offense and gets the job done early.
WVU 41, Robert Morris 13
9/6 – at Ohio
This is an odd game for the Mountaineers. Rarely do you ever see a Power Four program making a road trip to the Group of Five level. Ohio is coming off of an 11-win season, but will be starting a new era after their head coach left for Charlotte. While things will be a little too close for comfort going into halftime, Zac Alley’s defense takes over in the second half.
WVU 34, Ohio 21
9/13 – Pitt
The 2025 edition of the Backyard Brawl will be arguably the biggest in history. Rich Rodriguez has some demons to exorcise with the Pitt program. The Mountaineers come out fired up and pound the Panthers in Morgantown.
WVU 37, Pitt 17
9/20 – at Kansas
The Jayhawks will once again be a tough out for the Mountaineers. Jalon Daniels will give the WVU defense fits early and take the lead into halftime. However, the talent discrepancy will be obvious in the second half as West Virginia pulls away for the victory and a 4-0 start.
WVU 24, Kansas 20
9/27 – Utah
Don’t expect the Utes to have a down year again in 2025. Kyle Whittingham will have things figured out, leading the program to a year of resurgence. In the end, Utah makes the stop needed to steal the win in Morgantown.
Utah 27, WVU 21
10/3 – at BYU
This is not a favorable spot for WVU. After the heartbreaking loss to the Utes, the Mountaineers will return to the road to take on the BYU Cougars on the first Friday in October. The crowd becomes a factor while the Cougars secure a big home victory.
BYU 34, WVU 17
10/18 – at UCF
The Knights will be a hard team to get a grasp on all offseason. Back is Scott Frost, but gone is sensational running back R.J. Harvey. We have more faith in Rich Rodriguez than Frost here. WVU beats UCF for the third-straight season.
WVU 28, UCF 21
10/25 – TCU
The Mountaineers make a much needed return home to take on the Horned Frogs. TCU will be one of the favorites in the Big 12 going into 2025. This will quietly be one of the most exciting games in the Big 12 this season. We will lean with WVU here. The Mountaineers improve to 6-2 and reach bowl eligibility in Rich Rodriguez’s return.
WVU 24, TCU 23
11/1 – at Houston
The last time the Mountaineers were in Houston, the Cougars left with an improbable win on a Hail Mary. Given the roster turnover for both schools, there won’t be many players that remember the 41-39 Houston win in 2023. Willie Fritz will have the Cougars on the uptick this season. WVU loses another heartbreaker to Houston.
Houston 33, WVU 27
11/8 – Colorado
Deion Sanders is set to make his Morgantown debut. Thought the two programs don’t have much history, Mountaineer Nation will show up to cheer against one of the hottest names in all of college football. Expect WVU to come out of the gates swinging. The Mountaineers notch a massive win against the Buffaloes.
WVU 31, Colorado 17
11/15 – at Arizona State
Arizona State will be one of the best teams in the Big 12 once again in 2025. This trip out west will prove to be a miserable one for the Mountaineers. Rich Rodriguez simply doesn’t have the roster to compete with the best in the league quite yet. Nicco Marchiol continues what has become a solid season, but the Sun Devils make one stop too many to take down WVU.
Arizona State 26, WVU 14
11/29 – Texas Tech
The Red Raiders have won five of the last six against the Mountaineers. With Neal Brown gone, this could be a matchup that proves to be a favorable one for WVU again. Rich Rodriguez closes out his first season of his second stint with a statement win against what will be a sneaky good Texas Tech squad.

FINAL RECORD PREDICTION: 8-4 (5-4 Big 12)
