Greene, who played quarterback for WVU, made the decision to transition to wide receiver for his professional career. He announced this decision when he officially declared for the NFL Draft. Greene had the following to say during his announcement:
“Having sung Country Roads for the last time as a Mountaineer, I would like to announce my entry into the 2025 NFL Draft as a wide receiver,” Greene said. “I look forward to this next chapter of my career and the opportunity to continue playing the game I love at the highest level.”
Greene is exceptionally talented, but he played very few snaps as a wide receiver in college and at 5’11, he is very undersized at the wide receiver position in the NFL.
Over the course of his five years in Morgantown, Greene appeared in 45 games. It wasn’t until his final two seasons that he had the opportunity to be the starting quarterback for the Mountaineers.
When Greene graduated from West Virginia, he said that coming to Morgantown was the best decision he ever made. “I hope they (West Virginia fans) just saw a guy that gave everything for the state, gave everything for his teammates, his coaches, his family,” Greene said. “That’s really it. It’s been an honor of a lifetime to be able to represent the state, be able to represent this wonderful university.”
In his final game at West Virginia, Greene said that he tried to soak in the singing of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” after the win.
“I definitely tried to soak it in a little more than I usually do. … That’s the most special tradition in all of college sports, and I was grateful and thankful to be able to experience it,” Greene said.
“The fabric of the state kind of goes hand-in-hand with the fabric of my family,” Greene said. “So I think it was the best decision I ever could have made.”
Greene’s final collegiate stats are as follows:
Passing: 398-700, 5,370 yards, 36 touchdowns, 19 interceptionsÂ
Rushing: 352 attempts, 2,128 yards, 28 touchdowns
More free agent signings are expected as the evening goes on.
