MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The lights are bright, the crowd is electric, and the “Coal Rush” atmosphere in Morgantown has been nothing short of spectacular. West Virginia fans packed Milan Puskar Stadium tonight, decked out in black, ready to will their Mountaineers to a season-defining upset over the TCU Horned Frogs. And while the scoreboard reads 20–7 at halftime, there’s still a feeling in the air — that familiar Morgantown magic — that something special could happen.
Freshman quarterback Scottie Fox has looked poised beyond his years, completing 13 of 17 passes for 108 yards and a beautiful touchdown strike to tight end Grayson Barnes in the half. His decision-making and accuracy have kept WVU’s offense afloat against an aggressive TCU front.
In the run game, Diore Hubbard has battled for every yard, totaling 29 yards on 11 carries, while Rodney Gallagher has been Fox’s most reliable target, hauling in five receptions for 22 yards. The numbers aren’t flashy, but they show the grit and effort this young Mountaineer team continues to play with.
The defense has bent but not completely broken, and with a rowdy crowd behind them, there’s still a sense that one big play could turn the tide.
If West Virginia can come out of the locker room with renewed energy, capitalize on the crowd, and finish drives, the “Coal Rush” might just live up to its billing. The magic feels close — it’s up to the Mountaineers to make it real.
