Huggins: We Shouldn’t Have to Win Another Game to Get Into the NCAA Tournament

Lawrence, Kansas – The West Virginia Mountaineers (16-13, 5-11) almost pulled off an incredible upset victory over the #3 ranked Kansas Jayhawks (24-5, 12-4), falling late, 76-74. Here’s what Bob Huggins had to say following the disappointing loss:

“I thought we played really well. We turned it over too many times again. We turned it over 21 times and that’s something that we’ve talked about since Day 1.  It was a game that had good players in it and I thought our guys really competed. I think we’re getting better and better every game. We’ve done some really dumb things that have cost us some games, but we’re at the point where we’re really playing now.

We need another win. We shouldn’t, but we do. We have the #1 strength of schedule in the country. That should say something.

We couldn’t play our bigs. They just could not get in transition. We struggled with that. We pressed and didn’t really have a choice.

That last possession, we were going to run what we ran with Erik (Stevenson) in the Auburn game. I think it would have worked, but Joe (Toussaint) got caught up. We just couldn’t get it turned back.

I think our guys will be all right next game. They know what’s at stake. I don’t know why the hell we need another win with the schedule we’ve played.”

The Mountaineers are back in action Monday night at 9:00PM at #23 Iowa State. West Virginia will then close out the regular season with a home game next Saturday against #14 Kansas State.
