Mountaineers 12th in new tournament metric rankings

The NET, which is the primary analytical resource used by the NCAA ) Tournament committee, released its initial ranking of the season this week.

West Virginia (9-1) is ranked 12th in the NET’s first ranking of the season. The Mountaineers cracked the AP Top 25 first the first time this week as well, coming in at No. 25.

Starting with last season, the NCAA Tournament committee began using NET rankings instead of the RPI as its go to analytical model for selection and seeding purposes. The NET updates its rankings on a daily basis https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1/ncaa-mens-basketball-net-rankings.

Ohio State is the No. 2 team in the current NET ranking. WVU plays Ohio State in Cleveland on Dec. 29.

Kansas is currently the No. 1 ranked team in the NET. Three Big 12 teams are currently in the NET top 25. Joining WVU and Kansas is No. 6 Baylor.

Wichita State, whom WVU beat 75-63 in the finals of the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 27, is ranked 14th.

WVU returns to action Saturday when the Mountaineers travel to Youngstown State.
