Mountaineers Lose Frustrating Season Opener at Maryland

College Park, Maryland – The West Virginia Mountaineers and Maryland Terrapins started off fast offensively in the first half, but the game turned into a defensive battle in the second half.

West Virginia led 21-20 at halftime before Maryland taking a 23-21 lead in the 4th quarter.  Jarret Doege then threw a terrible interception in the back of the endzone.  Following the interception, Maryland had a 5 play, 80 yard drive that put them ahead 30-21.

West Virginia scored their first points of the second half when Casey Legg hit a 23 yard field goal with 2 minutes and 53 seconds remaining in the game.  Maryland got the ball back and ran out the clock for the win.

Jarret Doege finished the game 24/40 for 286 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.  Leddie Brown had 16 rushes for 69 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, as well as 4 receptions for 43 yards and 1 touchdown through the air.

Winston Wright had 6 catches for 42 yards and added 217 yards on 5 kick returns (43.4 average), including a 98 yard run.  Sam James had 6 catches for 65 yards for West Virginia.

The Mountaineers are back in action next Saturday, September 11, against Long Island University in their home opener.  The game starts at 5:00PM and will be televised live on ESPN+.
