Mountaineers Roll in NCAA Tournament 1st Round

Indianapolis, Indiana – The West Virginia Mountaineers overcame a tough effort by the upset-minded Morehead State Eagles to win their NCAA Tournament first round game, 84-67.

Morehead State kept it close throughout the first and early second half, but West Virginia was able to close the game out and get legendary head coach Bob Huggins his 900th career win!

Huggins joins Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Bob Knight and Roy Williams as the 5th head coach in Division I basketball to reach 900 wins!

The Mountaineers were led by a sensational effort from Miles “Deuce” McBride, who finished the game with 30 points!  Jalen Bridges had 15 points, Sean McNeil added 13 and Derek Culver shrugged off a tough first half to finish with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

PLAY OF THE GAME

West Virginia will now play the Syracuse Orange, the 11 seed in the Midwest Region, who easily handled the 6 seeded San Diego State tonight, 78-62.

The date, game time and TV channel will be determined soon.  Syracuse has a 17-9 overall record and a 9-7 in the ACC Conference.

A big win by both the Mountaineers and the Orange tonight sets up a huge matchup between two legendary head coaches, Bob Huggins and Jim Boeheim, in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.
