Neal Brown: “Our State and University Needed This Win”

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The West Virginia Mountaineers moved to 2-1 on the season with a huge 17-6 win over the Pitt Panthers in the 106th edition of the Backyard Brawl. Here’s what West Virginia head coach Neal Brown had to say following the game:

“Definitely the most intense, most energy I’ve experienced here. The crowd really helped us out there tonight. Huge win for us! They call it ‘The Brawl’ for a reason; it wasn’t pretty. But regardless, it was a win for West Virginia. Losing last year was something that has stuck with us for 54 weeks. We’re a tough football team. We’re a mentally and physically tough football team. I’m proud of our guys and our staff.

Our state needed this. Our team needed this. Our university needed this. We needed this and so it’s a big win on a bunch of different levels. Our coaching staff deals with a lot of negativity; I live in a bubble and only go to 3 different places (the stadium, my house and the radio show), but the coaching staff and their families hear the negativity and have to deal with it. I’m happy for them because they won’t have to deal with that for a week. ”

West Virginia is back in action next weekend against the Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-2) at home at 3:30PM. Great win tonight! Let’s Go Mountaineers!
