Neal Brown: “We Want to Prove A Lot of People Wrong This Season”

Morgantown, West Virginia – West Virginia head coach Neal Brown met with reporters today at the Big 12 Media Days in Dallas, Texas, and he clearly feels very optimistic about the state of the Mountaineers football program and their chances for the upcoming season.

“We continue to climb.  We just finished up $55 million in renovations and program enhancements.  We have a lot of momentum in recruiting right now.  Off the field, our team had a 3.1 GPA and we graduated 100% of our guys, so we’re really proud of them in that area.  Culturally, our buy-in is very high right now and we’ve made a lot of progress over the past few years.  I really like our team.  I think our leadership is better than it’s been since I was hired.”

On Jarret Doege: “I feel really good about Jarret Doege.  He’s probably our most improved player in the offseason.  He’s moving better in the pocket and he’s ready to take the next step.”

Defense: “I think we had one of the best defenses in the Big 12 and nationally, and our statistics back that up.  That’s going to be the unit with the most experience and the unit that leads us.   We have ”

Offense: “We have experience for the first time, especially up front.  Doege had the best spring of anyone on that side of the ball.  Up front, we have great experience and I feel very good about our offensive line.  We have to be more explosive on the offensive side of the ball.”

“We’re picked sixth in the preseason poll, but you can’t control that.  Like I tell my guys, you can either prove them right or you can prove them wrong.  We want to prove them wrong.  If you have a good offensive and defensive line, you have a chance to win in college football, and we have that right now.”
