Neal Brown’s Top 5 Wins With the Mountaineers

Morgantown, WV – In just five short seasons in Morgantown, Neal Brown has accumulated 31 wins. Many of the victories have been filled with excitement, but there are a select few that have been more important than others.

Today, we are going to take a look at Neal Brown’s best five wins with the Mountaineers. While this is certainly a subjective topic depending on the individual fan, these games are the ones that we believe stand out above the rest.

Without further ado…

5. Iowa State (2021)W 38-31

WVU’s win against the Cyclones may have lost its luster for some due to Iowa State 7-6 finish in 2021. However, there is no debate when it comes to the Cyclones’ talent that season. Brock Purdy, Breece Hall, and Charlie Kolar headlined a roster that had a top-10 preseason ranking. Many expected Iowa State to even win the Big 12 that season. Jarret Doege put together a career day, and the defense made plays when it mattered most. This was undoubtedly one of the best coaching jobs in Neal Brown’s career.

4. Pitt (2023)W 17-6

For the first time in nearly twelve years, the Backyard Brawl made its way to Milan Puskar Stadium. While the game itself may have been void of fireworks, the victory did enough to cool down Neal Brown’s hot seat exponentially. Even with backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol in the game, the Mountaineers were determined to give payback for a 38-31 loss to the Panthers a year prior. An incredible body tackle on M.J. Devonshire, the previous hero of the Backyard Brawl, was just the icing on the cake.

3. North Carolina (2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl)W 30-10

Despite many of the Tar Heels’ starters not participating in the game, Brown put together his most impressive bowl win during his tenure at WVU. It was a struggle, but the Mountaineers were able to pull away in the end for a three-score victory. Combine that with a “mayo bath” for Neal Brown in the end, it truly was a great night to be a Mountaineer. Hopefully this will be a sign of things to come in Morgantown.

2. Virginia Tech (2021)W 27-21

The Black Diamond Trophy had been in Blacksburg since 2003 going into the game. Neal Brown and the Mountaineers were determined to bring the hardware back home to stay. After taking a commanding 27-7 win, the Hokies stormed all the way back with a chance to steal a victory in Morgantown. It was a Jackie Matthews pass breakup on 4th & goal that secured the win for WVU in the end. Take Me Home, Country Roads has never been sweeter.

1. Oklahoma (2022)W 23-20

It took the Mountaineers an entire decade to knock off the Sooners in Big 12 play, but they finally prevailed on Senior Day in 2022. A Casey Legg walk-off field goal was the result of Garrett Greene’s emergence as the Mountaineers’ quarterback. This win not only prevented Neal Brown’s firing, but officially put WVU on an upward trajectory for the future. While it may have been the Sooners’ worst team in decades, the win is still one that Mountaineer Nation will treasure for years to come. Without a doubt, the 2022 victory over Oklahoma is the best win of the Neal Brown era.
