MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — West Virginia’s hopes this Saturday against Utah were thrown into uncertainty after head coach Rich Rodriguez announced at his weekly press conference that starting quarterback Nicco Marchiol visited a specialist in Colorado today regarding a foot injury.
Rodriguez revealed that the issue had been nagging Marchiol for “a little while,” but worsened enough that the team felt it necessary to get further evaluation. While no official diagnosis has been released, Rodriguez admitted that Marchiol’s status for Saturday is “up in the air”, listing him as “questionable.”
The injury bug has clearly hit the Mountaineers. Tye Edwards (hip pointer), Landen Livingston (ankle) and Cyncir Bowers (concussion) are all questionable for the Utah game this weekend.
If Marchiol is unable to go, it would mark a major shift for the Mountaineers’ offense. Losing him — even for a week — would force Rodriguez to turn to the backup options, who lack Marchiol’s experience and leadership. Jaylen Henderson, Scotty Fox, Khalil Wilkins and Max Brown could all see action on Saturday. Utah, coming off a strong defensive performance last weekend, would be a difficult draw for any quarterback making his first start.
Rodriguez made it clear that the training staff will continue to evaluate Marchiol throughout the week. “We’ll see what the specialist has to say,” he said. “He’s as tough as they come, but we’ve got to be smart about it. His long-term health is the priority.”
While nothing is finalized, the possibility of facing Utah without Marchiol raises serious questions about West Virginia’s ability to move the ball and keep pace. The Mountaineers already face an uphill battle as double-digit underdogs, and their quarterback’s health may prove to be the deciding factor.
Fans will now spend the next few days anxiously awaiting updates — and hoping Marchiol can find a way to be under center when the Mountaineers take the field on Saturday.
