Morgantown, West Virginia – Nicco Marchiol fought hard and very nearly advanced to the Arizona State Championship, but his #1 ranked Hamilton High School Huskies fell to the #3 ranked Saguaro Sabercats, 31-24 in the semifinals of the 2021 A1A State Football Championships.
Marchiol had another outstanding performance in the loss, finishing the game 15/21 for 200 yards and 1 touchdown (117.2 quarterback rating). In addition, Marchiol rushed 8 times for 70 yards.
Unfortunately, Marchiol ran out of miracles on this night.
Marchiol finished his remarkable high school senior year with 2,641 yards, a school record 36 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. As a four year starter during his high school career, Marchiol was 637/942 (68% completion percentage) for 8,261 yards, 90 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,295 yards and 24 touchdowns during his high school career.
Although the result of last night’s game was no doubt disappointing for Marchiol, he now intends to enroll early next month at West Virginia University to prepare for his freshman season with the Mountaineers.
Marchiol is expected to compete for the starting quarterback position with incumbent sixth year starter Jarret Doege, redshirt sophomore Garrett Greene and sophomore Will “Goose” Crowder.
Next stop: Morgantown, West Virginia.
