MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Former West Virginia basketball player and son of former WVU head basketball coach John Beilein, Patrick Beilein, has been appointed head coach of Mohawk Valley Community College’s men’s basketball team, the defending NJCAA Division III champions. The Hawks are coming off a landmark season in which they beat Herkimer College 58‑51 in the national championship game, finishing with a 29‑1 record. Led by coach Harley Fuller, the team won ten straight games down the stretch and captured the program’s first NJCAA national title.
Mohawk Valley Community College formally announced Beilein’s hiring on July 22 and noted that his appointment will be ratified by the board of trustees in August. A native of Fayetteville, New York, Beilein will oversee recruiting and coaching for MVCC’s highly competitive program. The school emphasized that he will also mentor student‑athletes off the court to help them succeed academically. MVCC athletics dean Dominic DiMaggio welcomed him warmly, saying that Beilein’s experience “will enable MVCC Men’s Basketball to continue our championship success at the national level.

Beilein is best known as the son of college‑basketball legend John Beilein. John’s résumé includes head‑coaching stints at West Virginia (2002‑07), Michigan (2007‑19) and the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers (2019‑20). He led teams to two NCAA Final Four appearances (2013 and 2018) and amassed more than 750 wins at four‑year universities, making him one of a select group of Division I coaches with 700‑plus career victories. He is also renowned for his clean program and for taking four different schools to the NCAA tournament. Patrick grew up around that culture of discipline and integrity; he played for his father at West Virginia University, where he appeared in 128 games, scored 1,001 points and helped the Mountaineers reach the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 in 2005 and 2006.
Patrick Beilein’s coaching résumé includes success at multiple levels. As head coach of Division II Le Moyne College from 2015‑19, he guided the Dolphins to three NCAA tournaments, earned Northeast‑10 Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and 2018 and recorded a 12‑game winning streak—the second longest in program history. He has also served as head coach of the Syracuse Stallions of The Basketball League, the varsity coach at Baldwinsville High School, a player development coach for the NBA’s Utah Jazz and the head coach at Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College. His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia University.
