On Thursday, Troy University placekicker/punter Tyler Sumpter announced via Twitter that he would be entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. While he will be moving quickly to look for a new home, one potential landing spot for the upcoming Redshirt Senior could be in Morgantown. The Mountaineers just lost Josh Growden by graduation, so punting duties will be up for grabs throughout the spring. Currently on the WVU roster is redshirt freshman Kolton McGhee and redshirt sophomore Evan Mattes, neither of which have collegiate experience.
According to College Football Reference, Sumpter punted 156 times for the Trojans while averaging 42.2 yards per attempt. He also finished his Trojan career hitting 39 of 51 field goal attempts and connecting on all 125 extra point attempts. Sumpter would give the WVU special teams unit much needing experience for the 2020 season.
