Morgantown, WV – Following his departure from West Virginia University, Neal Brown was rumored to be the top candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Appalachian State University. With his Power Four experience, as well as previous success in the Sun Belt Conference, this was viewed as a “no-brainer” for many within the industry.

Now, it appears as if that will not come to fruition.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, South Carolina defensive coordinator Dowell Loggains has “emerged as the target” for the Appalachian State head coaching job.

Brown stated in an interview with Hoppy Kercheval on Sunday that he expects to be coaching in 2025. With the Appalachian State job, even Kercheval himself claimed that he would “not be surprised” if Brown landed in Boone, North Carolina.

With coaching vacancies quickly being filled, Brown may now be looking to secure a spot as an assistant coach on a staff for the upcoming season. It is rumored that he turned down the Charlotte job. He has not been mentioned as a major candidate at any of the remaining Group of Five jobs that are now available.

Brown finished his tenure with the Mountaineers at 37-35. Prior to his WVU stint, the Kentucky native had a successful run as the head coach of the Troy Trojans.

Speculation will now begin as to where Brown will land for the 2025 season. Stay tuned to The Voice of Motown for updates on the situation!
