MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — After West Virginia’s embarrassing 41–10 loss at Kansas, plenty of frustration is boiling over in Mountaineer Nation. Fingers are being pointed everywhere, and some fans have already begun calling for a quarterback change. But make no mistake — benching Nicco Marchiol would be a massive mistake.

Nicco Marchiol has not been perfect, but he’s also been set up to fail. He’s operating behind an offensive line that is completely falling apart, especially after the loss of Landen Livingston, one of WVU’s few reliable linemen. Tackles Kimo Makane’ole and Ty’Kiest Crawford have struggled all year, and the run game is non-existent with Tye Edwards out and Clay Ash still somehow getting carries despite averaging under three yards per attempt.

When your quarterback is under constant pressure and has slow, undersized playmakers to throw to, no one is going to look good. The idea that Marchiol is the root of WVU’s problems is flat-out wrong.

If Rich Rodriguez wants to salvage this season, he needs to focus on fixing what’s around his young quarterback:

  • Shore up the offensive line. Scheme quicker passes, move the pocket, and stop asking Marchiol to survive behind turnstiles.

  • Stop forcing Clay Ash. Turn to other options like Cyncir Bowers or Diore Hubbard — anyone who can create some spark in the run game.

  • Open up the playbook. Conservative playcalling is killing WVU. Take shots, get creative, and trust Marchiol to make plays.

Do those things, and suddenly the offense looks far more competent.

Playing Jaylen Henderson reduces West Virginia to a one-dimensional Pop Warner offense who can’t throw the ball. Scotty Fox and Khalil Wilkins aren’t ready yet. Rich Rodriguez clearly doesn’t trust Max Brown. There are quite literally no other options available.

As bad as things looked in Lawrence, this season isn’t lost. WVU sits at 2–2 overall, and the schedule still has winnable games against teams like Houston, Colorado, and Texas Tech. If Rodriguez makes adjustments and sticks with Marchiol, the Mountaineers can absolutely get to six wins and become bowl eligible.

Rich Rodriguez cannot panic and make Nicco Marchiol the scapegoat. He’s by far the quarterback who gives WVU the best chance to win football games. The focus must shift to fixing the offensive line, diversifying the run game, and getting playmakers into space.

West Virginia’s season can still be salvaged. But only if Rodriguez resists the noise, sticks with Marchiol, and fixes everything around him.
