MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez isn’t taking next Saturday’s opponent lightly. During The Rich Rodriguez Show live from Kegler’s, the Mountaineers’ coach offered high praise for Ohio quarterback Parker Navarro, calling him not only the best in the MAC—but one of the best in the country.
“He’s not only a willing runner, he’s really quick. He can make all the throws. He’s the best quarterback in the MAC, but he’s also one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.” – Rich Rodriguez
Navarro isn’t just a pocket passer—he’s a true dual-threat weapon. His ability to extend plays with his legs while also hitting deep throws makes him the focal point of the Bobcats’ offense. Rodriguez made it clear that containing Navarro will be WVU’s top defensive priority in Athens.
Rodriguez has coached and schemed against some of the most dynamic quarterbacks in college football over the last two decades, from Pat White to Kyler Murray. When he praises a QB like this, it’s not coach speak. It’s a sign of the respect Navarro has earned.
The Mountaineer defense was dominant in their 45–3 win over Robert Morris, holding the Colonials to just 123 total yards. But Navarro presents a far different challenge. WVU’s front led by Hammond Russell IV must contain his scrambling ability, while defensive backs like Jordan Scruggs will need to stay disciplined against his passing.
If the Mountaineers can limit Navarro, they’ll be well-positioned to justify being favorites on the road. But if he gets comfortable, Ohio has the kind of quarterback who can turn the game into a shootout.
Rich Rodriguez knows what he’s walking into next Saturday: a matchup against one of the MAC’s most dangerous players and, in his words, “one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.”
For WVU, the key will be simple—slow down Parker Navarro, or risk letting the Bobcats’ star dictate the game.
