MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Moments ago, it was revealed by multiple sources that Ross Hodge is expected to be named the next head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers!

Hodge, 44, was the head coach of the North Texas Mean Green basketball team for the past two seasons, leading them to a 43-23 overall record and a 24-12 record in the American Athletic Conference. North Texas beat Oklahoma State in the Quarterfinals of the NIT last night and advanced to the semifinals of the tournament. It’s unclear at this time whether Hodge will continue to coach the team or if he will immediately fly to Morgantown to begin working with the Mountaineers.

WVU director of athletics Wren Baker is familiar with Hodge from his time as the athletic director at North Texas from 2016-2022. Hodge was the Associate Head Coach at North Texas from 2017-2023 before taking over the program two years ago. Prior to his time at North Texas, Hodge was the Associate Head Coach at Arkansas State (2016-2017), an assistant coach at Colorado State (2012-2016), an assistant at Southern Miss (2011-2012) and was highly successful as a head coach at the junior college level. At Paris Junior College, Hodge was 83-17 (.830) and 63-7 at Midland College from 2009-2011.

Although Hodge seems like an underwhelming hire at this time, Wren Baker has hit grand slams with his previous hires. Since arriving at West Virginia, Baker has hired Mark Kellogg as the women’s basketball head coach, Darian DeVries as the men’s basketball coach, promoted Steve Sabins as the baseball team head coach and hired Rich Rodriguez as the football head coach.

According to his bio on the official North Texas basketball website, “Hodge was a two-year starter at Paris Junior College, where he won the Bobby Walters Leadership Award in 2001. He finished his playing career at Texas A&M-Commerce, where he was honored with the Terry Allen Award for leadership and positive representation on and off the court in 2003. Hodge is a native of Dallas, Texas. He and his wife, Shelly, have two children.”

We welcome Coach Hodge and his family to Morgantown and wish him nothing but the best! It will be important for Coach Hodge to attempt to keep returning starters Sencire Harris and Amani Hansberry, as well as try to get four star recruit and #1 player in the state of West Virginia, Braydon Hawthorne, to re-commit to the Mountaineers in the coming days.
