Morgantown, West Virginia – The 2022 West Virginia Mountaineers football recruiting class – currently ranked 22nd in the nation and 3rd in the Big 12 Conference – is loaded and an absolutely remarkable achievement for Neal Brown in only his third year at WVU.
Today’s commitment from four star wide receiver Kevin Thomas, the #1 receiver in the state of Pennsylvania and the 36th best in the nation, moved the Mountaineers ahead of traditional powerhouse programs like Michigan State (23), Florida (26), USC (31), Tennessee (41) and Miami (45).
Pitt’s class is currently ranked 50th. Dana Holgorsen’s Houston Cougars? 98th.
Neal Brown continues to hit home run after home run, and he’s doing it largely by building a family atmosphere where recruits and current players feel like they are truly a part of something greater than themselves.
During Brown’s first two seasons in Morgantown, he was left with little to work with and spent most of his time changing the culture and building his vision from the ground up. Each and every commit this season has cited the culture and family atmosphere that Brown and his staff have built as the main reason for committing to play for the Mountaineers.
The 2022 class currently has 16 commits – 4 four star players and 12 three stars – featuring quarterback Nicco Marchiol, cornerback Jacolby Spells, running back Justin Williams, defensive ends Aric Burton and Zion Young, offensive linemen Maurice Hamilton, Landen Livingston, Sully Weidman and Charlie Katarincic, wide receivers Jarel Williams and Kevin Thomas, athletes Tyrin Woodby, Christion Stokes, tight end Corbin Page, defensive back Mumu Bin-Wahad and linebacker Raleigh Collins!
It all starts with Marchiol, the four star phenom quarterback from Chandler, Arizona. Marchiol is not only a tremendous player and leader on the field, he’s also an incredible recruiter of talent. Marchiol has major pull among elite high school athletes and he will impact the football program as much in that way as he does leading the team on the field.
The most beautiful thing is that Neal Brown and his staff aren’t done yet! If four star linebacker Travious Lathan and four star athlete Jaden Mangham both commit – as they are almost certain to do – West Virginia could end up with a top 10-15 recruiting class, which is unheard of for the Mountaineers.
Despite major uncertainty about which conference the team will ultimately end up in, the future of West Virginia football has truly never been more exciting.
