The Future WVU Signal Caller Nobody is Talking About

Ever since he stepped on campus, Garrett Greene has been the talk of Morgantown. The 6-foot, 180 pound freshman from Tallahassee, Florida is viewed by many to be the “signal caller of the future” for West Virginia. Of course, it will be a while before he becomes a key contributor for the Mountaineers as he will have to wait for his turn behind current quarterback Jarret Doege. However, once Doege’s career is finished, Greene will not be the set in stone starter for West Virginia. He will be met with competition on the other side of his long wait.

Back in April, the Mountaineers earned the commitment of quarterback Will “Goose” Crowder. The 6’2″, 195 pound prospect from Gardendale, Alabama is currently listed as a three-star prospect, per 247Sports. Crowder is a part of the 2021 class, and garnered interest from many respectable schools such as Iowa State, Boise State, Kentucky, and Virginia Tech among others.

When Crowder arrives in Morgantown, he will not be a day one starter. Instead, he will likely redshirt in 2021, leaving way for him to compete for playing time in 2022. That is if Jarret Doege decides not to exercise his extra year of eligibility. Once Crowder enters the conversation of a quarterback competition, all bets are off.

He possesses solid arm talent, as well as the athleticism to evade rushers. One of his key strengths is his ability to throw the deep ball. Crowder can fit it into windows deep down field, and does so with good touch and arch on his passes. On intermediate and short routes, he has also displayed deadly accuracy on his throws.

So what makes this so significant? Well, you don’t have to look far down WVU’s roster to find out. Most of what Crowder is best in are the same strengths that current WVU quarterback Garrett Greene possesses. This could truly turn into a quarterback battle for the ages as it will give each gentlemen a chance to prove they are better than their competition, and cement themselves as the quarterback of the future for the Mountaineers.

Garrett Greene may garner all of the buzz right now, but it won’t be long until Will Crowder enters the conversation to add some intrigue to the situation.
