Huntington, WV – It was a long time coming, but Tony Gibson finally has his first opportunity as a head coach. The former WVU defensive coordinator was named Marshall’s head football coach in December following the departure of Charles Huff to Southern Miss.
He has hit the ground running in Huntington, working hard to build his program. Yesterday, Gibson spoke about recruiting – specifically in the state of West Virginia. There was no lack of confidence from Gibson in the Herd’s ability to beat out the flagship program, West Virginia University, on the recruiting trail.
Here is what Gibson had to say about recruiting the Mountain State:
”We’re going to own this state, and we’re not going to let the good players leave this state…or go to that school up north if I have anything to do with it.”
“𝑾𝒆’𝒓𝒆 𝑮𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒐 𝑶𝒘𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆!”

It appears as if Gibson is ready to take on West Virginia University. Following the departure of Dana Holgorsen in 2019, Gibson was interviewed for the Mountaineers’ head coaching vacancy. It ultimately went to Neal Brown after a successful stint at Troy University.
Tony Gibson opens his Marshall coaching career when the Herd travels to take on the Georgia Bulldogs on August 30th.
