Tucker DeVries Projected as a 1st Round 2025 NBA Draft Pick

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Tucker DeVries has not played a minute for the West Virginia Mountaineers yet, but he is already gaining attention as a potential 1st Round Draft Pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

DeVries, a 6’7 senior from Waukee, Iowa, averaged 21.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game as a junior at Drake last season, shooting 44.4% from the field, 36.3% from three point range and 81.3% from the foul line.

DeVries was the Larry Bird Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and the MVC Tournament Most Outstanding Player for the last two seasons, and was the only NCAA Division I men’s basketball player to average at least 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game last season.

This season, DeVries will face a major step up in competition as he goes former the Missour Valley Conference to the undisputed most difficult conference in the nation, the Big 12 Conference. Playing his final season at West Virginia in the Big 12 will really show NBA scouts and executives whether he’s ready to play at the next level or not.

According to NBA Draft Room, “DeVries is one of the best outside shooters in college basketball. At 6-7 with a solid frame he’s got the size to play at the next level and he has a legit NBA skill with his sweet jumper and ability to score the rock from the perimeter, and is a great off the catch and shoot and can shoot well off the dribble. DeVries sees the game at a high level, makes good decisions, moves well without the ball and plays a complete game. He’s not a great run/jump athlete but is a capable defender, gives good effort and plays with a lot of heart.”

However, DeVries is “lacking in lateral speed and control while changing directions”, according to a scouting report from Sports Illustrated, and “he’ll need to focus on consistency as a shooter as well as improve his movement” to be successful in the NBA.

With that said, DeVries is already considered a a late first round or early second round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. SBNation, in its latest 2025 NBA Mock Draft, projected DeVries being picked #30 overall in the 1st round. With a solid season against the top competition in the nation, DeVries could see his draft stock go through the roof!
