Two Major Transfers Visiting WVU This Weekend

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The West Virginia Mountaineers have been very quiet in the transfer portal so far, but according to multiple sources, the team is ready to make a big splash with major transfers visiting Morgantown this weekend.

Former Ohio State Buckeyes players Reid Carrico and Cameron Martinez are expected to visit West Virginia University and the Mountaineers’ coaching staff would like to wrap up commitments on one or both this weekend.

Carrico, a junior linebacker from Ironton, Ohio, is a former four star recruit, the #4  rated player in Ohio, the natio’s 5th ranked linebacker prospect and was ranked #84 nationally regardless of position by 247Sports.com. Since joining the Buckeyes, Carrico played 4 games in 2021 and eight games in 2022, most on special teams. Despite his lack of playing time at Ohio State, Carrico is a massively talented player who is searching for a larger role on a team like West Virginia. Carrico has already visited Morgantown once recently and this second visit is obviously a great sign for the Mountaineers’ staff. He has two years of eligiblity remaining.

Cameron Martinez, a 5’10 senior safety from Muskegon, Michigan. He is a former four star prospect and was rated as the nation’s #14 athlete out of high school. He was Michigan’s Gatorade Player of the Year and won three different awards as the Michigan player of the year, including the title of Mr. Football.

Since arriving at Ohio State, Martinez was a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and an Academic all-Big Ten Conference honoree. In his three seasons with the Buckyes, he had 40 total tackles, 25 solo tackles, 15 assists, 3 passes deflected, 1 interception and 1 touchdown. He also has two years of eligiblity remaining and is also searching for an opportunity where he can come in and start immediately. Again, a situation like West Virginia could be a perfect opportunity for Martinez to finally get the playing time he needs to really shine.

West Virginia has lost several key players on defense already this offseason and are rumored to be losing more in the coming days. Ultra-talented players like Reid Carrico and Cameron Martinez would be be absolutely perfect fits to fill the defensive voids. Expect this recruitment to go fast and for Carrico and Martinez to potentially be Mountaineers in the coming days.
