West Virginia Dominates Long Island in Home Opener

Morgantown, West Virginia – The West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) defeated Long Island Unviersity (0-2) 66-0 in their home opener at Milan Puskar Stadium.  The Mountaineers got on the board 11 seconds into the game with a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Winston Wright and didn’t look back from there.

West Virginia’s starter Jarret Doege had a very solid start, finishing 14/22 for 267 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Redshirt freshman Garrett Greene played one possession in the first half and then took over in the 3rd quarter.

Greene looked sharp and added a whole new dimension to the offense as a true dual threat quarterback.  Greene finished the day 4/7 for 67 yards passing and had 14 rushes for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.

Outside of Greene, West Virginia struggled to develop a running game.  Senior Leddie Brown had 15 carries for 23 yards (1.5 yards per rush), sophomore Tony Mathis had 18 yards on 7 rushes and freshman Justin Johnson added 47 yards on 10 carries.

The Mountaineers will be back in action next weekend for perhaps the biggest game of the season against bitter rival Virginia Tech.  The game starts at noon and will be shown live on Fox Sports 1.
