The opening week of the 2022 high school football campaign saw a record nine matchups on Thursday, 48 games on Friday evening, and no games on Saturday night for the first time in history! Additionally, Week 1 featured the debut of 14 new head coaches who were dispersed throughout the state. In addition, West Virginia experienced a lot of rainfall, and many contests were postponed due to thunderstorms in the vicinity of football stadiums!
The only genuine shocker in Class A occurred in Sistersville, where home team Tyler Consolidated defeated Class A State Champion Ritchie County 41-0! This week’s challenges for the Rebels do not get any easier as they travel down to Mason, West Virginia, to take on the unbeaten White Falcons of Wahama. Wahama crushed Ohio’s Racine Southern 53-0 on Friday night!
In class AAA, Brit Sherman and the #1 ranked Martinsburg Bulldogs will host the Applemen of Musselman in a Berkeley County rival matchup. In other noteworthy AAA games, the #3 Bridgeport Indians will travel up I-79 to take on the Mohigans of Morgantown in a central West Virginia battle. Also, University High will have a challenging test and a long journey as the Hawks board the bus to travel to Wood County where they will meet the unbeaten Patriots of Parkersburg South!
In class AA, 2021 State Champion and #1 Fairmont Sr will have their hands full as the Cadets of Linsly from Wheeling invade East-West Stadium, some of the outstanding games in Class AA this week will feature Class AAA Princeton making the short trip to Mitchell Stadium to take on the (0-1) Beavers of Bluefield.
