MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — It wasn’t pretty, but it counts. West Virginia slogged through a cold shooting night and still finished off Campbell, 73-65, to open the season 2–0. The Mountaineers shot just 39% from the field and endured long scoring droughts, but timely plays late—and a handful of gritty individual performances—were enough.

Guard Honor Huff led WVU with 23 points and 2 rebounds, finding tough buckets when the offense bogged down. His shot-making in the final minutes proved to be the difference as Campbell (0–2) threatened to steal it.

Seven-footer Harlan Obioha gave West Virginia a reliable target inside, posting 12 points and 6 boards. Wing Treysen Eaglestaff matched that line with 12 points and 6 rebounds, knocking down timely shots to halt Campbell runs.

If there was a box-score stuffer, it was Brenen Lorient: 11 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 4 steals. His length and motor changed possessions at the rim and in passing lanes.

True freshman DJ Thomas supplied instant offense off the bench with 10 points, providing a much-needed jolt on a night when clean looks were scarce.

By the numbers

  • FG%: WVU 39%

  • Top scorer: Huff (21)

  • Key impact: Lorient’s 4 blocks, 4 steals swung momentum without needing shots to fall

  • Bench lift: Thomas (10) kept the Mountaineers afloat during second-unit minutes

This was a grind-it-out resume win: not flashy, but a lesson in closing when the shots don’t drop. The defensive playmaking—blocks, steals, contested boards—bailed out an offense still finding rhythm.

What’s next

West Virginia returns to the Hope Coliseum on Sunday at 3:00 PM against Lehigh, then turns immediately to rivalry week, hosting Pitt in the Backyard Brawl on Thursday at 6:00 PM. Expect an emphasis on cleaner half-court execution before the Panthers arrive.

Mountaineers 2–0. Style points can wait.
