Morgantown, West Virginia – The West Virginia Mountaineers (6-6) will play the Minnesota Gophers (8-4) from the Big Ten Conference in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday, December 28th at 10:15 PM on ESPN.
Minnesota finished in 2nd place in the Big Ten West with a 6-3 conference record. The Gophers beat Miami (Ohio), Colorado, Purdue, Nebraska, Maryland, Northwestern, Indiana and Wisconsin, and only lost to Ohio State, Bowling Green, Illinois and Iowa this season.
The Guaranteed Rate Bowl will be played at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, a Major League Baseball field that will be transformed into a football field for the game.
After a 2-4 start to the season, the Mountaineers won 4 of their final six games, securing bowl eligibility. Coming back from such a poor start to the season to finish 6-6 with the potential to beat a really tough Big 10 team in a bowl game would go a long way for the future of the West Virginia Mountaineers football program.
