MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Pat McAfee’s impact on West Virginia University extends far beyond the millions of dollars he’s donated over the years. According to Mountaineer athletic director Wren Baker, the value McAfee has brought to the university simply can’t be measured in dollars.
In a recent interview with Front Office Sports, Baker made it clear that McAfee has become one of the most valuable ambassadors WVU has ever had. While the former Mountaineer punter has contributed financially—including a $1 million donation to Country Roads Trust in 2024 and stepping in to cover a donor’s financial commitment—Baker believes his greatest contribution is something money simply can’t buy.
“No one has developed a market share in terms of sports media that’s any greater than Pat’s,” Baker said. “He’s an unapologetic champion for WVU.”
That support has become even more visible over the past year. McAfee has repeatedly used his massive platform to shine a national spotlight on West Virginia, bringing The Pat McAfee Show to Morgantown for Rich Rodriguez’s return as head coach, attending the Mountaineers’ Super Regional, and even taking his show to Omaha during WVU’s historic College World Series run.
What is Pat McAfee's value to West Virginia, his alma mater he constantly champions?
"Maybe eight figures," WVU AD Wren Baker tells FOS. "I tell Pat all the time how grateful and thankful we are."https://t.co/bVuJcHMJ7F

What makes McAfee different, though, is that he doesn’t want special treatment.
“He said he just wanted to be immersed in it,” Baker told Front Office Sports. “He didn’t want to sit in a suite. He wanted to sit in the crowd. He wanted to be part of the fan base.”
That authenticity is something Baker says resonates throughout the university and the state.
“That’s huge for us, and I tell Pat all the time how grateful and thankful we are that he’s one of us and that he’s proud of being one of us, and that pays huge benefits for us.”
Perhaps Baker’s most eye-opening quote came when he was asked what would happen if McAfee ever sent West Virginia an invoice for everything he’s done for the athletic department.
“We couldn’t pay for it,” Baker said. “It would be way up in the seven figures, maybe eight figures.”
While the exact amount McAfee has donated to WVU athletics has never been publicly disclosed, it’s clear his overall value stretches far beyond financial contributions. Every time he mentions the Mountaineers on ESPN or to the millions of viewers and listeners who follow his daily show, West Virginia receives exposure that most athletic departments could never afford to purchase.
“Anytime he goes anywhere, that’s instant brand recognition, instant brand value,” Baker said. “You’re going to have an excitement that’s created. You’re going to have people showing up, the atmosphere’s going to be incredible. It’s a huge asset for not just our institution, not just our athletic department, but also the state.”
In today’s college athletics landscape, where NIL, fundraising, and national exposure have become more important than ever, having someone with Pat McAfee’s reach passionately advocating for West Virginia is an enormous advantage. His love for the university has never appeared to be about publicity or recognition. Instead, it comes from someone who genuinely loves the Flying WV and wants to see his alma mater succeed on the biggest stage.
For West Virginia, that’s a resource that truly has become priceless.
