WVU Long Island GAME DAY Staff Predictions

Morgantown, West Virginia – The West Virginia Mountaineers (0-1) open their home season this evening against a team called the Long Island University Post Pioneers (0-1).

Long Island was beaten badly last weekend 48-10 by Florida International, giving up 594 yards (276 yards passing, 318 on the ground).  Although West Virginia struggled offensively last week against Maryland, the Mountaineers should be able to do whatever they want today, particularly on the ground with Leddie Brown.

With that said, West Virginia should absolutely roll today in preparation for their huge game next weekend against rival Virginia Tech.  Here’s how our experts think the game will play out today:

Tucker Via, Writer, The Voice of Motown (0-1 on the season)

West Virginia is back home in front of a full capacity crowd for the first time since 2019 and the matchup is an easy one.  Fans are still restless and are looking forward to the Week 3 matchup with Virginia Tech.  Today though, we will have to be content with a win over Long Island.  My prediction:  Jarret Doege will look good and so will Garrett Greene.  The truth is, everyone will look good today and it will be the typical cupcake blowout win for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia should win this game by 100 points and if Neal Brown wasn’t such a nice guy, they probably would.  However, it’s likely that Jarret Doege will get a few possessions against a really bad Long Island defense and look really good, which will only further cement him as the team’s starter, unfortunately.

When Garrett Greene gets snaps, Brown will almost certainly be extremely conservative and make very safe play calls.  Leddie Brown gets 150 yards, Doege looks like the “improved” version of himself that Neal Brown lauded all offseason and West Virginia gets a big, albeit unimpressive, win.
