Huntington, WV – Despite being in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game, it appears as if the Marshall Thundering Herd will be on the search for a new head coach in the near future.

According to Pete Nakos of On3, Southern Miss has targeted Huff to be their next head football coach. This comes on the heels of rumored contract disputes between Huff and Marshall University.

Huff has compiled a record of 31-20 during four seasons with the Herd. His highlight moment was during the 2022 season when he brought Marshall to South Bend, Indiana and toppled the 8th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

There have also been reports that Marshall is planning on targeting Tony Gibson, a former WVU defensive coordinator, to be their next head coach should Huff depart. Gibson has spent the last six seasons with the NC State Wolfpack, serving time as their defensive coordinator.

It should be expected that Herd fans will know something for sure as early as next week. Huff, who has overall been successful with the Herd, would be making a lateral move within the Sun Belt Conference for his next gig. However, as we have learned in college football, contract disputes can prompt surprising changes within organizations, as well as coaches looking for their next job.

Marshall will take on Louisiana for the Sun Belt Championship this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 P.M. The game will broadcast on ESPN.

According to ESPN Bet, Louisiana is currently a four-point favorite. ESPN’s FPI gives the Herd a 39.7% chance at victory. This will be Marshall’s first appearance in the Sun Belt Championship Game, and their first conference championship appearance under Huff.
