Morgantown, WV – It has been over a decade since the West Virginia Mountaineers and Marshall Thundering Herd last met on the gridiron. After a 69-34 win by WVU back in 2012, the series was shelved and talks of its return have been stagnant – until now.

Earlier this evening, Marshall head coach Tony Gibson shared a cryptic message about the Herd and the 2027 season. In a post from Marshall Football’s official page, the Herd claimed the title of being the only program that went undefeated at home in 2024. Gibson captioned this post with no other messaged than the year “2027.”

Gibson would clarify that his reasoning behind this tweet was the Herd’s open non-conference slot on their 2027 schedule.

However, there have been reports and rumors circulating that there may be more to this. According to The Herd’s Headset, a popular account on X, things may be in motion for big news regarding the WVU-Marshall series soon.

While this tweet was also cryptic, the account appears to be alluding to a possible revival of the Friends of Coal Bowl.

On the other side of this rivalry, Coach Rich Rodriguez has been adamant that he is not interested in the revival of the WVU-Marshall series. The Herd’s Headset also shared a fake quote from Rodriguez about the possibility of Marshall being added to WVU’s future schedule.

While this is may be a fake quote from Rodriguez, he claimed during his introductory press coverage that he has no interest in Marshall or anything going on in Huntington. If he has any say in it, the series could potentially have no chance at a revival during his second stint in Morgantown.

More rumors and reports are expected to surface about this situation. Stay tuned to The Voice of Morgantown for updates regarding the potential revival of the WVU-Marshall football series.
