MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — That did not take long.

After opening the season with three wins on the road, West Virginia Mountaineers baseball are officially a Top 25 team. When the new rankings dropped Monday morning, coach Steve Sabins and his club found themselves listed in both major national polls.

It is the kind of early validation that gets attention, but the way it happened says even more than the number next to their name.

West Virginia entered the year already respected by Baseball America, landing at No. 21 in the preseason.

After the 3 and 0 start, that respect grew. The Mountaineers bumped up one spot to No. 20 this week, rewarding a team that showed it can win in different ways away from home.

The bigger jump may have come from D1Baseball.

WVU was not ranked there to begin the season. Now they are, sliding into the poll at No. 25 following the sweep. Their rise came as a couple of preseason teams struggled out of the gate, opening the door for a hot club to jump in.

West Virginia kicked it open.

Friday’s opener suggested a relaxing weekend. The Mountaineers blasted their way to a 15 to 3 win and announced themselves immediately.

But baseball rarely stays simple.

Game two turned into a fight. Even after building an early advantage, WVU had to survive late drama before escaping with an 11 to 10 victory. Instead of folding, they answered pitches, at bats, and momentum swings.

Sunday required toughness again. The series finale sat tight before West Virginia produced three unanswered runs across the final three innings to secure a 5 to 2 win.

Different scripts. Same result.

Rankings this early are snapshots, not guarantees. They can rise quickly and disappear just as fast.

But they do tell you when a team has national eyes on it.

West Virginia now does.

Winning on the road, handling pressure, and finishing games are traits voters notice, especially in the first week when everyone is still figuring out who is real.

Three games, three wins, and now a number beside the name.

It is a strong start, a deserved reward, and a reminder that this group expects to be part of the national conversation all spring.

The Mountaineers are in the Top 25.

Now comes the hard part. Staying there.
