WVU Football: ESPN Predicts Disastrous Season for the Mountaineers

According to ESPN’s projections, West Virginia has an 85.8% chance to beat Coastal Carolina in the season opener and a 96.3% chance against UT Martin. After that, however, the outlook changes dramatically. The Mountaineers are given just a 27.2% chance to beat Virginia in Charlotte, a 49.1% chance against Oklahoma State, 45.5% at Iowa State, 40.3% against Arizona, 39.9% versus Cincinnati, 24.4% at TCU, an extremely low 6.3% chance at Texas Tech, 50.4% against Kansas, 38.1% versus Houston, and 18.7% at Utah. Overall, the projections suggest West Virginia will have a tough road to bowl eligibility with a predicted 3-9 record.

Those projections come after the Mountaineers finished 4-8 last season in Rich Rodriguez’s first year back in Morgantown, but there are plenty of reasons to believe this team can outperform those expectations. Rodriguez attacked the transfer portal with one clear goal: add proven production instead of relying on potential. Throughout the offseason, he has emphasized creating legitimate competition at every position, and the roster looks much deeper than the one he inherited a year ago.

Quarterback is one of the biggest reasons for optimism. Rodriguez has repeatedly praised both returning quarterback Scotty Fox and transfer Mike Hawkins, saying the competition has elevated the entire offense. Hawkins brings valuable experience and athleticism, while the Mountaineers also added several experienced transfers on both sides of the ball to better fit Rodriguez’s system.

History also suggests it’s unwise to count out Rich Rodriguez. His teams have traditionally taken significant steps forward once players become comfortable with his fast-paced, physical style of play. After spending last season laying the foundation and reshaping the roster, West Virginia enters 2026 with far more depth, experience, and competition than it had a year ago.

Computer models are useful, but they don’t account for chemistry, player development, or the impact of a coaching staff entering its second season together. If Rodriguez’s offseason additions perform the way many expect, don’t be surprised if the Mountaineers make ESPN’s preseason projections look far too pessimistic by the end of the season.
