MORGANTOWN, West Virgnia — The West Virginia head coaching search has heated up with multiple coaches with ties to the state being mentioned as candidates for the job. One name that has not come up, however, is Dana Holgorsen, and for very good reasons.

Holgorsen, 53, is the current offensive coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and recently signed a two-year extension to remain with the program. However, he ultimately reportedly wants to become a head coach again soon. With that said, Holgorsen will not return to West Virginia in 2025 or anytime soon. The Nebraska FanSided account “Husker Corner”, however, brought up the possibility that Holgorsen would consider leaving his job as the offensive coordinator for the opportunity to be the head coach again at West Virginia and seemed concerned about the likelihood of it happening.

In the article released today titled “One New Opening Could Stand Between Nebraska Football and Dana Holgorsen”, writer Oliver Vandervoort said the following: “It’s possible that the Huskers could be the victims of a program trying to fix a mistake it made in allowing a former coach to walk. And it’s possible this is the one that could stand in the way of Nebraska keeping Dana Holgorsen on board more than any other job.”

Vandervoort went on to say, “While the Huskers’ OC went on record earlier this summer saying he didn’t regret leaving West Virginia for greener pastures, one has to wonder if he might regret not going for the job now if he doesn’t try.”

While Holgorsen was employed as an assistant at TCU after being fired at Houston, he had to say the following about his time at West Virginia: “I had been at West Virginia for eight years and was very successful. But there was a couple of things that I was concerned about that made me do that. I do not regret that. You look at what happened at Houston. I mean, we were 4-8 in the first year in the Big 12 I guess that’s not good enough. But a couple years prior to that in the American, which is why I went there, we won 20 games in two years. We had some success and I don’t regret that either.”

While there will be speculation with a variety of candidates for the open position at West Virginia, Nebraska fans can rest assured that Dana Holgorsen is not a candidate and will likely never coach the Mountaineers again.
