Tony Gibson Considered a Top Candidate for Available Head Coaching Position

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Former WVU defensive coordinator and West Virginia native Tony Gibson has done a phenomenal job as an assistant throughout his career and now, he may finally get his opportunity become a head coach!

Gibson, 51, coached the Mountaineers from 2001-2007 and then again from 2014-2018, has been the defensive coordinator at NC State since 2019. With Mike Elko leaving Duke to replace Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M, Duke is now searching for its next head coach and Gibson is considered a top candidate for the position.

According to The Athletic, Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and Gibson are “among those in the mix” and some reports suggest that all three candidates have already met with the program.

Gibson has had an incredible career as a defensive coordinator/assistant, and although he doesn’t have experience as a head coach at this level, he would undoubtedly be an outstanding fit at Duke.
